The Dream of Gerontius is one of Edward Elgar’s finest works, and indisputably one of the finest choral-symphonic works in all of music. He’d written other large choral works before, but this one was huge and held a special poignant appeal for him. The result is a powerful human drama, a music drama echoing Wagner. It’s remained the best known and the most admired of all his large-scale choral works. It’s also one of those works from the romantic period that needs to be experienced live in order to understand and appreciate its full power.’
